Weekend Wear-abouts: Beyond Disney--Visiting Charleston, SC

Just popping in to share our exciting weekend plans. The hubs and I are headed to Charleston, South Carolina to celebrate our 1 year wedding anniversary-slash-babymoon.

I've never been before. John lived there for a few years and is eager to show me his old stomping grounds. I'm excited to bask in the genteel Southern atmosphere, eat at some yummy restaurants, visit some spots I've seen on Southern Charm, and shop! Anyone else watch Southern Charm? I think Cameran is so cute- she always wears the cutest clothes, and is freakin' tiny, that bitch. ;)

Two of my favorite bloggers,  Ashley from Sweet Southern Prep and Natalie from Designer Bags and Dirty Diapers, both live in Charleston. I've scoured their posts for food and shopping recs.

Here's some of what's on our agenda:

We're staying in a petite suite, complete with fireplace and jacuzzi tub, at the Fulton Lane Inn. (One of Southern Living's recommended hotels!)

Dinners at Grill 225 and The Macintosh.

Shopping at Candy Shop Vintage, Roberta Roller Rabbit and Candlefish, to name a few. I'm going to get a few strands of Charleston Rice Beads as souvineers to myself.

A few outfits I'm taking include some cute, flowy dresses (one maternity, one not).

I also picked up the annual Lilly Pulitzer 4th of July print-- they put a different version out every summer before Memorial Day. I usually get a pair of Callahans, but with a bulging 7-month baby belly, I decided to go with the Michelle V-Neck Tee this year.

So, what are your weekend plans? Have you ever been to Charleston? I'd love to hear your recommendations!

XO, Ashley

  1. Hi Ashley! I love Charleston and I have loved reading your blog. I'm a former cast member but I still love being a frequent guest as well. : ) You will love Charleston. And you have the perfect wardrobe for it already ; )
If you and your husband are into seafood, The Ordinary on King has a great ambiance (it's inside an old bank building with the kitchen still behind the vault door) and all of their oysters are half off from 5-7 every day. All of the other are delicious as well--well worth the price. Pearls has a great half off food happy hour too that includes their yummy fried oysters served with blue cheese and hot wing sauce. For awesome tacos check out Minero (their chicken wings are a must as well). Indaco (owned by the same restaurant group as The Macintosh) has amazing pasta dishes and other takes on Italian food. Check out 492 King as well (their menu is all small plate meant to be shared, but the flavors are so perfect and uniquely layered) Callie's Hot Little biscuit is always busy but their biscuits (cinnamon, cheese and chive, bacon etc!) are a must. Sugar bakeshop has really homey tasting cupcakes and other classic takeaway desserts. There is also a Jenis on King Street if you need an ice-cream fix....oh and if you just need a burger and fries (or grilled cheese) late night, The Rarebit has a diner style menu (and prices) but has a classy vintage vibe. They also serve food late...there are really so many places it is hard to narrow down my favorites. When my boyfriend and I visit, we like to make our rounds and have mini dinners at multiple places : ) I could go on and on, more than I already have!
I can't wait to read about your dinner at Grill 225 (it's on my list). PS the Macintosh has a terrific Sunday brunch as well.
I rarely comment on the blogs I read, but I couldn't resist reaching out this time.
    Enjoy your baby-moon!

    1. Thanks so much for reading and commenting! Great advice- Being preggos, I have to pass on raw oysters (sad!) but we'll be back and I can't WAIT to try out Pearls and The Ordinary and eat my weight in them! Callie's was closed by the time we made it up there on Sunday-- there's so many on our list that we couldn't see or do it all this trip. Grill 225 was good, and the Macintosh was wonderful. I'll write a recap soon. XO
